in a halter class the judge is looking for a few different things. one, how the horse is built. if you have a quarter horse the judge is looking for a short neck, a nice, large, muscular hip and a intelligent looking head exc. if you're showing an arabian. they're looking for a long lean neck, with high withers and a smart face. the judge is not only looking at the horses confirmation, but how the handler presents him/herself as well as the horse. the handler should be standing straight and tall with good posture with his/her eyes looking forward at where they are going. he/she needs to have good control of the horse as well. typically in a halter class you walk your horse straight to the judge then stop at the judge so they can look at your horse's confirmation. your horse should be standing square, if it's a stock type horse like a quarter horse, apaloosa, paint ext. or parked if it's a non stock type horse such as a walking horse, arabian, saddle bred and so forth. the head should be up and the ears should be perked up. once the judge is done with expection you would usually trot off about 3 to 5 strides then line up nose to tail. sometimes you wont stop after walking to the judge though. the judge may just ask you to trot as soon as you pass him/her. once all the horses in the class are lined up the judge will look around at all of the horses once more to make their final decission. if the judge is looking at your horse on the right hand side then you should walking in front of your horse over to the left side so the judge can see your whole entire horse from that angle instead of seeing your body blocking the head and neck of your animal. and vice versa for the when the judge comes to the left. i hope i helped you out. i know i wrote a lot, but i have been working with horses my whole life and i really like to help others out with their horses. if you have any more questions id be glad to answer, just email me.
