: I just bought an 11 mo. old filly, who's got a World Champion bloodline in halter events from boths parents. I am wanting to learn more about this type of event so that I might be able to show her in one, but I am having a hard time finding a site that tells me exactly what the event consists of, or how to train the horse for that event, or even what the judges are looking for. I basically need a "Halter Events for Dummies" book ! Help, how do I get started???

Hi Brandy;

A halter event is a conformation class - the judges are looking for the ideal conformation of whatever breed is being shown. Your filly will need to be very well halter trained, leading, standing quietly, trotting by your side and having a strange person walk around her, possibly look in her mouth, etc. Check in your local area for trainers who show whatever breed your filly is and get them to give you some tips. Check at your local feed store or veterinarian to find these people - they are out there and willing to help in most cases.
There is a new book out there that might help you - THE COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO HORSES is a useful book for beginners.
When you do start showing her, you might want to locate some smaller 'learning' shows - in Texas they are often called 'fun' shows. They are very useful to teach you what goes on at a show, and more importantly to teach your filly how to behave at a show. Plus there will be people at these shows who should be willing to help out a beginner. Go as an observer first just to see what they do and how they do it, and remember - your filly has to be well schooled on leading, standing tied, trotting at your side, etc - this is all basic stuff but it is the foundation on which all of her future training will be based so it needs to be solid. No dragging her along behind you. This takes time, so don't get in a hurry with her or you will sour it for both of you. Good luck and check out those books, videos, etc. GaWaNi Pony Boy has an excellent video on horse training and behavior which explains why horses react in various ways and helps you work through them.
