: I have a 13 year old quarter horse not Reg. I have had him for a year. This summer I have been having trouble with colicing. I have had him checked by a vet. We did the power pack on him. He hasn't colicd in a while now, but he has very loose bowels. I feed whole oats, sweet feed, small amount of bran, alfalfa pellets, liquid vitamins, flax seed. He gets plenty of hay. Can any one tell me why he has loose bowels and what I can do about it?

Hi Sue -
Did the vet check his teeth when he was examined?
You might try crimped oats - they are somewhat easier to digest than whole oats. Bran could be causing the problem, or the liquid vitamins or the flax seed - any of those can cause loose bowels. Why don't you try eliminating just one thing at a time from his diet and see if that will indicate what is causing the problem? For instance, eliminate the flax seed for a week - if nothing changes, then eliminate the alfalfa pellets and so on. It could be the combination that is the aggrivation. Does he have access to grazing along with the hay? Grass is a horse's natural diet, so if he has access to a pasture that could help. Good luck.
