I wouldn't feed dog food to a horse. If the horse gets into by mistake, fix it so that it won't happen again. Dog food has nutrition that is prepared for dogs, not horses. I don't think an episode of a horse getting into the dog food will make him sick, unless he gets too much into him..that may cause problems.
I once saw an old mare I had loose in the back yard, go over to the dog dish and start eating the kibble. Interesting...I thought, as I pulled her out of it. Then a couple of days later, the dog went over and started eating the horse's dinner with the horse. O.k. what's in common with these two foods that both of them would like each other's food. I looked at the labels and the first ingredient was CORN. There you have it...they were both seeing corn for what it was!
: I have a mini-horse who's 8 months old. He just LOVES dog food. It doesn't matter what I do he is always in it or getting into our 4 other dog's food. We feed the dogs at a separate time than the horse to cut back his consumption. My concern is if the dog food is bad for him or could cause him to get sick and/or colic. If it's not bad for him, how much is too much?
