: : I recently adopted several wild horses. One 1 yr old filly has what appears to be numerous blisters on her nose. Her appetite isn't affected. It is voracious. No signs of respiratory problems, stool is firm. She is very social. Other than the blisters she appears in good health. What could cause the blisters and what can I use to treat it?
: : Thanks for your help :)
: Hi - These are probably warts, not real common, but not uncommon either. They normally go away on their own, given time or I have heard that there is a wart vaccine, however I suspect that it needs to be given before the onset of the warts. Years ago, the recommended treatment for warts was to smother them in mineral oil - just apply it daily and it will help kill them. Other than being unsightly there is really no danger or damage that they do. This is something that youngsters get occasionally. You might want to check the veterinary supply catalogs and see if there is anything out there as a treatment. Good luck.
If they are truly blisters, then they will be filled with fluid. Warts are solid. I learned something new this year. With all the rain we've been getting, the clover is everywhere. In this weather, it can contract a mould from the soil called Trifoliosis. This fungus produces toxins that cause blistering, salivating and can damage the liver. The blistering appears wherever they come in contact with it...nose and fetlocks. My horse were salivating...which was quite disturbing. I kept thinking "horses can't throw up!" Vet was no help. I then found out on a forum that it was the clover. I got them out of the field and the salivating stopped immediately and the blisters healed. On the other hand, if your horse has a white nose, maybe its just sunburned and would improve with some sunblock. LOL! Just think, if you walked around with your nose on the ground all day, what do you think it would look like in the long run? A little TLC will go a long way. Good luck
