: she is 26 years old. the stallion was 2 years old last may he had just dropped. we now have him fixed. how do i tell if she is pregnant. she is very moody and a lot bigger on her left side than her right. she bit me in december and she has never even tried to do that. we have had to put her by herself because she is now kicking the gelding. she was never like this. she is also getting picky on her food. she has always been so sweet and she is not a dominate mare.she has not developed a bag yet. thank you.
Hi Chris - Get the book, Blessed Are The Broodmares by M. Phyllis Lose. It is probably the best book written on broodmare care and will give you all of the information you need.
You should be able to have your local library get it for you on an inter-library loan or you can find it anywhere horse books are sold. Watch your mare for udder development - if she was bred last April or May, she should be foaling in the next few weeks. Or it could be a phantom pregnancy - they go through all of the signs of pregnancy but do not have a foal. This could be caused by a harmone imbalance due to her age. Good luck.
