I do not have a horse but I do have a genetic chronic disease called Friedreich's Ataxia(FA). [It is similar to a bad case of multiple sclerosis.] In FA, one of our largest problems seems to stem from our lack of nursing. Colostrum sets up all kinds of changes that allow a baby to glean its many nutrient requirements from the foods eaten (rather than the placenta/'blood supply' of its mother).
One very special nutrient allows a horse (and a human) to develop the means to digest a family of fats called: the essential fatty acids. Bovines (cows) do not need these fats from their food, so it is unlikely that bovine colostrum contains this activator. [I have tried bovine colostrum (easily available) a number of times and have seen little change.]
I am trying to locate a supply of horse-colostrum hoping that its EFA-activator is similar enough to the human one.
There is little doubt that newborn colts also need colostrum, but perhaps they do not need ALL the colostrum a mare makes. Since this is an experiment with unknown results: I would love to try it .... but do not know where to get some. If you would like to help me, please try!
